IKEA Restaurant, McDonalds, Burger King, Domino’s are in the news
IKEAU, Iceland — IKEA, McDonald’s, Burger Kings, Dominos are all in the headlines after the country’s government announced it is considering banning their sale in Iceland.
The government says it will ask for a referendum on whether or not to ban the chain’s stores in the country.
“I think it’s very important to look at the issue of retail outlets being taken away from the people,” said Árni Thorlindsson, a deputy minister in Iceland’s ruling party.
I would like to see a discussion on this very serious matter, he added.
According to the government, more than 600 stores of the chain will be closed in the next three months.
Iceland has been hit by a severe tourism slump, which has been blamed on the loss of a popular holiday destination, and a number of recent terrorist attacks have led to protests.
Earlier this month, the government announced plans to sell off some of its more popular tourist destinations, including Reykjavík, Reykjanesjokull and Fjords.
