How Puerto Rico is preparing for Hurricane Maria and what it will mean for the rest of the island

A day after the island’s governor, Ricardo Rossell√≥, said the U.S. territory would not be able to send aid to Puerto Rico after Maria devastated the Caribbean, Puerto Ricans are still struggling to process the aftermath.

In an interview Sunday, Rossello said the federal government is “not in a position to help us” as the storm passes over the island, a city of nearly 1.4 million people in the Caribbean that was battered by Maria in late October.

“The federal government of Puerto Rico cannot give us the necessary assistance to get through this,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

Rossello’s comments came as President Donald Trump called Puerto Rico’s governor to offer assistance, which the president has said is a “very good thing.”

The president on Sunday said that “a lot of the damage was done by the hurricane and it’s not even close to the island,” though he added that Puerto Rico would be forced to rebuild after Maria.

Rosell√≥ also said the island needs to prepare to deal with “another storm, a hurricane.”

In a tweet, Trump also said that Rossellos “sought help from Puerto Rico and the federal authorities,” according to CNN.
